Nordhorn Zoo – the family-friendly zoo in the countryside
With around half a million visitors, this family-friendly zoo is one of the most popular destinations in the Bentheim district. More than 2,500 animals representing over 100 different species live in Lower Saxony’s third-largest zoo, which is situated right on the Dutch border.
A visit to the zoo guarantees “up-close encounters with animals”, as many of the lifelike enclosures are accessible to visitors. In this family-friendly zoo, visitors can get to know a wide variety of exotic animals, from leopards to zebras. A special feature of Nordhorn Zoo is the historic “Vechtewelt”. The Vechtehof forms the central part of the expanding historic area. This farm is home to many different old and, in some cases, critically endangered breeds of farm animals. A real crowd-puller is the petting zoo with piglets of the Bunte Bentheimer breed. In addition, in the “Vechtewelt”, alongside the “Mont Blanc” bistro, guests will find a playground with a low ropes course, the historic smithy, the “Nijnhuuser Schöppken”, the “De MalleJan” restaurant, a hay barn with changing exhibitions and a village butcher’s shop. A watermill is also due to be completed this year. At the heart of the zoo, a special highlight for all young visitors is the large adventure playground. Meanwhile, the goats, sheep and donkeys in the adjacent petting zoo are waiting to be stroked. This makes Nordhorn Zoo a thoroughly enjoyable day-out destination for the whole family! Parking is free and dog lovers are welcome to bring their four-legged friends on a short lead.
The family zoo is open to visitors daily from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm (opening hours vary from November to February). For more information, please visit www.tierpark-nordhorn.de.
